In the year of 1918 the Great War had ended, leaving mostly Western Europe scathed by conflict between nations. With groundbreaking technology the conflict proved to be one of the most devastating in world history, especially with the immense amount of casualties of over 38 million. Picking itself up from the ground that was stained with blood, Europe at the time did not have any idea of the conflict that would soon follow approximately twenty years after; another world war. It is the end of the first world war conflict, that began the foundation, traction, and rise of two leaders, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. During their political leadership, both have been faced with issues that needed to be handled. It is through these issues†¦show more content†¦Due to this failure, his hands were tied and he was forced to resign from the position. He then went into politics and became a member of parliament. In the House of Commons he was also shunned due to his persistent warn ings of Germany rising to power again. However, when Hitler had broken the agreement to not invade Poland, everyone saw that Churchill was accurate in his predictions. This moment led to his rise as prime minister of the nation. On the other side of Europe, the end of World War I led to the collapse of the Tsarist Monarchy and the rise of Vladimir Lenin and the Soviet Union. When Lenin died Stalin came on top of the power struggle for succession of the nation. Unlike Churchill, Stalin came from an impoverished family and had spent his time with revolutionaries of the Marxist movement. It was through his authoritarian views that led him to successfully rise to power. During their leadership as either Prime Minister of Great Britain or General Secretary of the USSR, both implemented policies that greatly affected their respective sovereignties. When France fell to Nazi Germany, Great Britain stood alone in the midst of a fallen Europe. Churchill realized that if Great Britain were to fall, democracy would as well. Video games have become an important part of children lives these days. As parents we need to help our children spend a reasonable amount of time on gaming. Allowing too much time on video games can hinder a child’s developmental process. Obsessive amounts of video game playing can cause; attention span problems, inhibit social interaction, aggression, poor social skills, and games are not intellectually stimulating. Parents need to take control and limit the time their children spend on video games each day. Paying Attention School children already have enough on their plates while in school and need to pay as much attention as they can to their teachers. Sixty-seven percent of elementary children are more liable to have attention span problems from playing video games for more than two hours (Klein, 2010). Some parents seem to believe that video games will not harm their attention like TV does. Researchers say that children who watch TV or play games for long periods struggle to pay attention to their teachers while at school (Klein, 2010). Parents will even say that video games do not affect their children’s attention because they can sit for hours playing with no problem. My presentation was on Art. I felt it was important because it is a big part of the world and without art our world would be so dual. Art starts way back used by cave mans it has a history to it. Without history there is no present day. Between the history and advantages and such I could go on and on about how useful it is. The invention in art such as the lead tube. It allowed for paint to stay fresh and not dry out. It was able to be portable which lead to many more artists painting outside. He stated that objects shrink in size according to their position and distance from the eye. He was able to mathematically calculate the scale of objects within a painting in order to make them appear realistic. Many painters at that time then adopted that formula into their paintings. Vietnam’s independence has come with much struggle, firstly with France’s determination to regain the empire they had ruled for over half a century and then later with America. Because of the length and the immensely confusing nature of the Vietnam War it is impossible to reflect on America’s oppression towards Vietnam without looking at the first Indochina War, where the Vietnamese fought against the domination of the French imperialism. Author and the setting of the play Essay This is an essay about An Inspector calls by John Boynton Priestly. I shall be particularly looking into the Inspectors character but I shall also talk about the author and the setting of the play.  John Boynton Priestly was born in Bradford in 1894. He served in the infantry in the Great War where he suffered many close escapes. After the war John attended the University of Cambridge. He worked as a newspaper critic and wrote about a number of subjects including his dislike of materialism and mechanisation in society. Priestly also had strong socialist views and thought all people in all lines of work should be paid the same, equal wage. He wrote a number of plays including Dangerous Corner (1932), and Dragons Mouth (1952). His well known play, An Inspector Calls was written in 1946. His wife was an English archaeologist and writer. He declined the offer of a knighthood and was awarded the Order of Merit from Elizabeth II in 1977. He died in 1984 aged 90 years old. The main characters in An Inspector Calls are the Birling family who are comfortably in the higher social classes and live in a smart Sub-urban house on the outskirts of Brumley. There is also Gerald Croft is from a more successful family and higher up the social ladder.  Arthur Birling likes to fit in with higher social classes but obviously tries too hard to impress people. He and his son Eric run his company, Birling and Co. Throughout the play, which is set during one evening, Mr Birling is trying to impress Gerald. He does this because Geralds parents (owners of Crofts Limited) are high up in society and he believes he could find himself a place on the next honours list for knighthood. Sybil Birling is Arthur Birlings wife. She is obviously more advanced in her social status and often looks down her nose at people. Mrs Birling is full of her own importance and thinks nothing of lower peoples lives and how her decisions affect them. She is a prominent member of a Brumley womens society and is always happy to use her influence to get her own way. Sheila Birling is the Birlings daughter. She is in her early twenties and is very happy with life. She plans to marry Gerald Croft and the couple are engaged. Gerald looks apon Sheila as an equal to him even though she comes from a lower social family. Sheila always speaks her mind and has very strong beliefs for a young girl.  Eric Birling is Sheilas brother. He is quite a tearaway compared to the rest of the family as he drinks heavily and is quite immature. In his early twenties, Eric often says things which he has not thought through and rarely considers the consequences of his actions, so often lands himself and others in trouble. Gerald is popular with the Birlings and especially with Arthur because of his higher social background. He presents Sheila with her engagement ring during the play. Gerald is not a shy character and has a strong personality. He is not a very opinionated person so seems to be a very popular person. You can tell from the dialogue that he has a great influence over Sheila,  Shelia: Is it the one you wanted me to have?  This however, doesnt mean he is dominant over her because Sheila is very self assured and confident. The Inspector has a very intimidating character and this becomes very apparent when he is questioning the Birling family. He introduces himself as a police Inspector only recently transferred to the Brumley force. Mr Birling takes this opportunity, as he usually does, to inform the Inspector how powerful he is in Brumley. He says he knows the senior ranking officer, Colonel Roberts of the Brumley police. This is meant to intimidate the inspector but he takes it in his stride. For example, he knows that Gerald has had an affair with Eva Smith but shows no knowledge of this. He arrives at the Birlings house in search of the person or persons responsible for the death of Eva Smith.  The Inspector behaves as if he already knows who is the main offender in the death of Eva Smith. He has an almost supernatural feel and demands respect when he enters a room. He creates an atmosphere of power and command. The Inspector is a very smart character and obviously makes the other characters, except Mrs Birling, very uncomfortable. He believes everyone is responsible for everyone else and this is reflected in his dialogue.  Inspector: She was still Eva Smith when Mr Birling sacked her for wanting twenty five shillings a week instead of twenty two and six.

Though its been nearly forty years since Fleetwood Macs landmark album, Rumours first hit the shelves of every record store in 1977, the young woman gracing the cover poised in a ballerina like stance draped in a black shawl with cascading blonde waves flowing down her shoulder remains much the same. Time has been kind to Stevie Nicks and in return she has given us the eternal gift of her soul through her music. Now at sixty-five, Stevie Nicks is back with her eighth solo album entitled, 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault. All of the songs on the album were written at various points in Nickslife, covering a nearly forty year span from 1969 until the late 1990s. Nicks has said in interviews that many of the songs were old demos made for other solo albums that had been shelvedfor various reasons and forgotten about. That is until she noticed many of them turning up on the Internet in various levels of completion. Realizing the interest, Nicks decided it was time to officially record and release the songs as a full album. Due to the fact that the songs were all written at different points in time, the album has no real cohesion. Rather its like a trip through Nicks life. Each song is intimate and personal, giving fans a unique and rare glimpse into the romances, friendships, loves and losses, that have left their imprint in Nicks mind over the years. The album starts of with Starshine a track that was originally demoed with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1981as a potential cut for Bella Donna. The new version of the song sticks close to the original with Nicks clear vocals floating over a Mike Campbell inspired guitar sound provided by longtime Nicks sideman, Waddy Wachtel. Petty who has been a close friend of Nicks since teaming up with her in 1981 on the chart topping duet, Stop Draggin My Heart Around is the focus of another song on the album, Hard Advise. The track recalls a conversat ion Nicks had with Petty after she had completed rehab in the mid nineties during which she had asked him to write a song for her next album. He refused telling her she was one of the best songwriters he had ever known and that she did not need his help. The response he gave her was unexpected and Nicks was motivated to write a song that night. In the song, she credits Petty as being her best friend as well as someone who will give her the best advice he can even though she may not want to hear it.A portion of the cuts on the album deal with romance, love and longing which is a staple amongst Nicks songwriting. She delves deep into her own emotions to bring forth the lyrics, bringing her own personal love and heartache to the forefront which serves to make the songs highly relatable to anyone who has experienced the same emotions. Since the songs are highly personal, one wouldnt be hard pressed to assume that many were written about former flame and fellow Fleetwood Mac bandmate, Li ndsey Buckingham. After having spent the last several decades writing songs about each other and their relationship, its hardly surprising that a few would make their way onto this album as well. Blue Water recalls a woman longing for her love, asking him to stay with her until the very end. She Loves Him Still is along the same vein with Nicks admitting that no one ever could understand her relationship with the person in question in the song. Although their romance is over she cant let him go and will always continue to love him. If the song is indeed about Buckingham, its clear that he continues to inspire her and adds fuel to the flames when it comes to Nicks emotionally raw songwriting. Some songs on the album are of a retrospective nature with Nicks looking back on the past. Watch Chain quite literally focuses on the passing of time. Nicks sings of how time seems to change people until they are no longer recognizable not only physically but from the inside as well. Perhaps fro m Nicks standpoint it is also a recounting of her rise to fame and how over time she learned to recognize a true friend from those who were just fame hungry. The Dealer finds Nicks comparing her life to a game of cards. Nothing in life is certain and Nicks states that even though she felt that she was in control of her life at certain times the path was unclear and the game of chance led her astray. Nicks seems to be admitting that though she has made mistakes in her in youth, she has grown wiser with time and has learned how to navigate the hardships that life throws her way with a clearer mindset that comes with age. Mabel Normand is a biographical songs that partially recounts the life of the silent film star whose name graces the title. However, Nicks has admitted in interviews that the song also is in part about herself. She felt a strong connection with Normand who like Nicks was at one point in her life highly addicted to cocaine. Scared that if she continued on with her addi ction,her career and life would be headed down a similar dark path, Nicks committed herself to rehab and thankfully overcame the addiction. However, the song takes us back to a time when Nicks was extremely vulnerable and scared, one side that Nicks rarely shows to the public. ‘Carousel’ the only cover on the album is Nicks’ tribute to her late mother, Barbara who passed away in 2011 at the age of 84. Barbara was her daughter’s constant companion and best friend throughout her life and Nicks felt that including her mother’s favorite song was a sufficient way to honor her memory. It’s a touching sentiment and the song fits nicely with Nicks vocal range, allowing her to sing in a soft, lullaby quality that echoes back to the heart wrenching opening of ‘Landslide.† Finally, Lady finds Nicks looking towards the future. In the song, her voice soars with emotion as she asks What will become of me? as if pleading for someone to tell her what lies ahead so she no longer has to worry.Though a rhetorical question, its one that can easily be answered. For the eternal gypsy queen, with her trademark platform boots and tiny frame wrapped in flowing shawls as she twirls across the stage lost in the music, one can conclude that Stevie Nicks will live on forever in the memory of anyone who has ever been touched by her music. Her songs are her babies, meant to carry on her legacy and what a legendary legacy it is. While she herself may be mortal, her music and image will forever remain immortal. Her songs are wrought with emotion, making the listener face their own fears, losses, loves and heartbreak. She connects to people on an extremely personal level, making her seem like a songstress goddess. Perhaps she was right all along and the sound of her husky, glorious voice will wrap around our dreams, dripping down like gold laced dust to haunt us for life. I for one am perfectly fine with that concept.
