Vietnam’s independence has come with much struggle, firstly with France’s determination to regain the empire they had ruled for over half a century and then later with America. Because of the length and the immensely confusing nature of the Vietnam War it is impossible to reflect on America’s oppression towards Vietnam without looking at the first Indochina War, where the Vietnamese fought against the domination of the French imperialism. Author and the setting of the play Essay This is an essay about An Inspector calls by John Boynton Priestly. I shall be particularly looking into the Inspectors character but I shall also talk about the author and the setting of the play.  John Boynton Priestly was born in Bradford in 1894. He served in the infantry in the Great War where he suffered many close escapes. After the war John attended the University of Cambridge. He worked as a newspaper critic and wrote about a number of subjects including his dislike of materialism and mechanisation in society. Priestly also had strong socialist views and thought all people in all lines of work should be paid the same, equal wage. He wrote a number of plays including Dangerous Corner (1932), and Dragons Mouth (1952). His well known play, An Inspector Calls was written in 1946. His wife was an English archaeologist and writer. He declined the offer of a knighthood and was awarded the Order of Merit from Elizabeth II in 1977. He died in 1984 aged 90 years old. The main characters in An Inspector Calls are the Birling family who are comfortably in the higher social classes and live in a smart Sub-urban house on the outskirts of Brumley. There is also Gerald Croft is from a more successful family and higher up the social ladder.  Arthur Birling likes to fit in with higher social classes but obviously tries too hard to impress people. He and his son Eric run his company, Birling and Co. Throughout the play, which is set during one evening, Mr Birling is trying to impress Gerald. He does this because Geralds parents (owners of Crofts Limited) are high up in society and he believes he could find himself a place on the next honours list for knighthood. Sybil Birling is Arthur Birlings wife. She is obviously more advanced in her social status and often looks down her nose at people. Mrs Birling is full of her own importance and thinks nothing of lower peoples lives and how her decisions affect them. She is a prominent member of a Brumley womens society and is always happy to use her influence to get her own way. Sheila Birling is the Birlings daughter. She is in her early twenties and is very happy with life. She plans to marry Gerald Croft and the couple are engaged. Gerald looks apon Sheila as an equal to him even though she comes from a lower social family. Sheila always speaks her mind and has very strong beliefs for a young girl.  Eric Birling is Sheilas brother. He is quite a tearaway compared to the rest of the family as he drinks heavily and is quite immature. In his early twenties, Eric often says things which he has not thought through and rarely considers the consequences of his actions, so often lands himself and others in trouble. Gerald is popular with the Birlings and especially with Arthur because of his higher social background. He presents Sheila with her engagement ring during the play. Gerald is not a shy character and has a strong personality. He is not a very opinionated person so seems to be a very popular person. You can tell from the dialogue that he has a great influence over Sheila,  Shelia: Is it the one you wanted me to have?  This however, doesnt mean he is dominant over her because Sheila is very self assured and confident. The Inspector has a very intimidating character and this becomes very apparent when he is questioning the Birling family. He introduces himself as a police Inspector only recently transferred to the Brumley force. Mr Birling takes this opportunity, as he usually does, to inform the Inspector how powerful he is in Brumley. He says he knows the senior ranking officer, Colonel Roberts of the Brumley police. This is meant to intimidate the inspector but he takes it in his stride. He has an almost supernatural feel and demands respect when he enters a room. He creates an atmosphere of power and command. The Inspector is a very smart character and obviously makes the other characters, except Mrs Birling, very uncomfortable. Nicks has said in interviews that many of the songs were old demos made for other solo albums that had been shelvedfor various reasons and forgotten about. That is until she noticed many of them turning up on the Internet in various levels of completion. Realizing the interest, Nicks decided it was time to officially record and release the songs as a full album. Due to the fact that the songs were all written at different points in time, the album has no real cohesion. Rather its like a trip through Nicks life. Each song is intimate and personal, giving fans a unique and rare glimpse into the romances, friendships, loves and losses, that have left their imprint in Nicks mind over the years. The album starts of with Starshine a track that was originally demoed with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1981as a potential cut for Bella Donna. The new version of the song sticks close to the original with Nicks clear vocals floating over a Mike Campbell inspired guitar sound provided by longtime Nicks sideman, Waddy Wachtel. Petty who has been a close friend of Nicks since teaming up with her in 1981 on the chart topping duet, Stop Draggin My Heart Around is the focus of another song on the album, Hard Advise. The track recalls a conversat ion Nicks had with Petty after she had completed rehab in the mid nineties during which she had asked him to write a song for her next album. He refused telling her she was one of the best songwriters he had ever known and that she did not need his help. Canadian Old Age Security (OAS) Pension Changes In Budget 2012, the Canadian federal government formally announced the changes it planned for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension. The major change will be raising the eligibility age for the OAS and related Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67, beginning April 1, 2023. The change in the age of eligibility will be phased in gradually from 2023 to 2029. The changes will not affect you if you are currently receiving OAS benefits. The change in eligibility for OAS and GIS benefits will also not affect anyone born on April 1, 1958. The government will also be introducing the option for individuals to defer taking up their OAS pension for up to five years. By deferring his/her OAS pension, an individual would receive a higher annual pension starting in a later year. In an effort to improve services, the government will be starting proactive enrolment for the OAS and GIS for eligible seniors. This will be phased in from 2013 to 2016 and should mean that eligible seniors will not need to apply for the OAS and GIS as they do now. What is the OAS? Canadian Old Age Security (OAS) is the single largest program of the Canadian federal government. According to Budget 2012, the OAS program provides approximately $38 billion per year in benefits to 4.9 million individuals. It is now funded from general revenue, although for many years there was such as thing as an OAS Tax. The Canadian Old Age Security (OAS) program is a basic safety net for seniors. It provides a modest monthly payment to seniors 65 years of age and older who meet the Canadian residency requirements. Employment history and retirement status are not factors in the eligibility requirements. Low-income seniors may also qualify for supplemental OAS benefits including the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), the Allowance  and Allowance for the Survivor. The maximum annual basic OAS pension is currently $6,481. Benefits are indexed to the cost of living measured by the Consumer Price Index. OAS benefits are taxable by both federal and provincial governments. The maximum annual GIS benefit is currently $8,788 for single seniors and $11,654 for couples. The GIS is not taxable, although you must report it when you file your Canadian income taxes. The OAS is not automatic. You must apply for the OAS, as well as for the supplemental benefits. Why is the OAS Changing? There are several critical reasons for changes being made to the OAS program. Canadas Aging Population: Demographics are changing. Life expectancy is increasing, and the age group of baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) is huge. The government predicts the number of Canadian seniors will nearly double from 2011 to 2030, from 5 million to 9.4 million. That puts a huge pressure on funding the OAS program, especially when the number of working-age Canadians (who will be paying taxes) per senior is expected to drop from four to two over a similar time frame.Cost: Budget 2012 estimates that the cost of the OAS program without changes would grow from $38 billion in 2011 to $108 billion in 2030. That means the 13 cents of every federal tax dollar being spent on OAS benefits today would become 21 cents for every tax dollar being needed for the program in 2030-31.Flexibility: Allowing seniors to choose to defer taking their OAS pension will provide them with more choice to make decisions appropriate to their own circumstances.Efficiency: The phased-in proact ive enrolment of many seniors in the OAS and GIS programs will not only reduce an unnecessary burden on seniors, it is also a long-overdue administrative change that should save government program costs. When Do the OAS Changes Happen? Here are the time frames for the changes to the OAS: Increasing the Eligible Age for OAS and Supplemental Benefits: These changes begin in April 2023 and are being phased in over six years until January 2029.
